The Sphere Was Just Named One of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023!

You have to experience this!

We are excited to announce Refik Anadol will be joining us in-person as a keynote speaker at the CA STEAM Symposium, February 9-10, 2024 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Anadol is an internationally renowned media artist, director, and pioneer whose work locates creativity at the intersection of humans and machines by combining art, engineering, mathematics, and neuroscience. He is the first to use artificial intelligence in a public artwork, and has partnered with teams at Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, Apple, Intel, IBM, NASA/JPL, Siemens, Epson, MIT, UCLA, Harvard University, Imperial College, Stanford University, and UCSF, to apply the latest, cutting-edge science, research, and technologies to his work.

Taking the data that surrounds us as primary material, and the neural network of a computerized mind as a collaborator, Anadol offers us radical visualizations of our digitized memories and expands the possibilities of interdisciplinary arts. The primary thread that runs throughout Anadol’s groundbreaking visualizations is the unseen world of data. For WDCH Dreams, 100 years of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s digital archives were tapped to inspire the visuals projected onto Frank Gehry’s iconic building. Oakland’s Sense of Place used real-time environmental data such as wind, temperature, and humidity as well as invisible communication signals from Bluetooth, Wifi and LTE to inform the work.

Anadol is the Director of Refik Anadol Studio in Los Angeles and Lecturer in UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts. Anadol has received a number of awards and prizes including the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award for New Media Art, Microsoft Research’s Best Vision Award, German Design Award, UCLA Art+Architecture Moss Award, Columbia University’s Breakthrough in Storytelling Award, and Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence Artist Residency Award.

Refik Anadol Studio comprises designers, architects, data scientists, and researchers from diverse professional and personal backgrounds, embracing principles of inclusion and equity throughout every stage of production. Studio members originate from 10 different countries and are collectively fluent in 15 languages. The Studio’s internship program also demonstrates a strong commitment to mentoring young people from a variety of personal experiences, values, and world views.
