Communication Continues To Be Key

2017-12-07T20:23:39+00:00

With the release of California's new baseline test scores on Wednesday, September 9, we know this is a critical time for parents, teachers, administrators, and school board members. As California teachers, schools, and districts delve into students' scores to better understand how to improve every student's academic performance, it is critical for public education stakeholders to communicate effectively with each other and with the community. We look forward to continuing the important work of the Common Core Communications Campaign and bringing our partners together to explore new opportunities to provide communication resources and training. We applaud the California Department of Education as they continue to collaborate [...]

Math Resources for Parents

2017-12-07T20:22:39+00:00

A number of resources are available to parents to help them better understand California's updated math standards, as well as to help students with their nightly math homework. Below are a few of our favorites! California PTA Parents' Guides to Student Success The California PTA's website provides grade-by-grade guides to give parents an overview of what they should expect their students to learn in English Language Arts and math. They also include activities to help students learn at home and topics for parents to discuss with their students' teachers about their academic progress. These guides have been translated into five additional [...]

The Digital Chalkboard

2017-12-07T20:26:20+00:00

The Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation (CDEF) has been supporting a new site, sponsored by the State of California, called Digital Chalkboard (https://www.mydigitalchalkboard.org), an online community of California public school and district educators. California educators can collaborate through group participation and discussions and upload educational classroom and administrative resources that help other educators access what works best in California schools and districts. Both featured content providers from select non-profit organizations and approximately 19,000 California educators continue to contribute resources and collaborate. With the fall 2014 launch of the new site, over 370,000 digital resources are present. It is an incredibly [...]

Common Core App

2017-12-07T20:25:51+00:00

Or have you seen wild claims on social media about nefarious content in CCSS? Your instincts tell you that there is a lot of misinformation out there, but you may have thought it difficult to address specific concerns or questions in a timely way. The good news is that there is an app for that! The Common Core App, developed by Mastery Connect, is a free mobile app that allows you to [...]

Mountains, Potatoes, and Common Core

2017-12-07T20:30:32+00:00

Although California has certainly been at the forefront of embracing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and much of the CCSS negativity in other parts of the county are largely absent in the Golden State, there are a number of other states that are doing some great work both in Common Core implementation as well as communication. Here we focus on a video series from Idaho focused on mathematics implementation of CCSS. One video does an excellent job at explaining the difference between standards and curriculum. Other videos in the series walk through each grade and illustrate how the Common [...]

How do I communicate what Common Core really is?

2017-12-07T20:31:37+00:00

School leaders and school board members across the country are struggling to explain the value of the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to parents and community members. California’s transition to CCSS represents a key part of our state’s public education remodeling project, but given the scope of the change it is difficult for the larger community to really understand what it is, what it isn’t, and what it all means for our students. Fortunately, there are already a number of communication tools that can be used by school leaders to communicate (a) why CCSS was developed, (b) how it [...]

Teachers Embracing Common Core

2017-12-07T20:31:56+00:00

In December, the California Teachers Association (CTA) announced a partnership with Stanford University for a three-year project to provide professional learning opportunities to educators statewide related to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The Instructional Leadership Corps (ILC) project involves 160 accomplished teachers and 24 education leaders and administrators who are creating professional development strategies and materials to support their colleagues in learning about and implementing CCSS and the Next Generation Science Standards. Over three years, the project will ultimately engage more than 50,000 California teachers and administrators in professional development. The ILC is a combined effort of CTA, the [...]
